Reflections (in the mirror?)

Students have been researching the Finance cluster. I would like for them to reflect on three similarities and three differences in that cluster (a total of six items). After that, I'd like for them to reflect on what they have learned (the takeaway) about that cluster.

Government and Public Administration

Today, I'd like students to compare the two careers they researched in the Government and Public Administration cluster. This being election day, it seems like a timely topic!

This Week in Review!

This was a busy week indeed in Career Exploration class. I'm always telling my classes that I have a plan for them and that we are headed in a direction to accomplish a goal. Sometimes students are able to influence that direction and goal by adding their suggestions and input. This week, I'd like to read about my students' reflections on what we did in class and why we did it. Hopefully I did a good job of letting them know what the plan was/is. Their responses should be interesting!

Business Mgt and Admin

Students are researching the Business Management and Administration at the beginning of this week. I would like to read about the job descriptions, skills needed, and education requirements for each of the careers they chose to research. It should be some interesting stuff!

Style. . .how important is it?

As much as I wish we were, we are not discussing students' personal sense of style. Fashion does not play a role--well not a large one anyway--in Career Exploration class. What we are discussing is learning styles and how they might affect each student's educational career. Using a popular learning styles inventory, my students have learned how they learn. I'm sure the thoughts are already there but I'd like for students to write about them. What is your style? What does your style mean to you? How does it impact your learning? How might you use this learning style knowledge to make things easier in high school and beyond? I'm looking forward to reading their repsonses.

Connecting Careers

Students in Career Exploration classes did research in Human Services and STEM this week. I wonder what kind of connections they can make between the two careers they chose within the Cluster they were researching!

Titles

The faculty/staff spent time choosing titles of our four academies and settled on the Academy of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), the Academy of Commerce and Industry, the Academy of Health and Human Services, and the Academy of the Humanities. Two of the four Career Exploration classes have already done research in STEM and the other two will be completing their research in that Career Cluster next week. The question I pose is why do you think STEM is the only academy that shares a name with one of the 16 Career Clusters? We don't have an academy named Transportation, Distribution and Logistics. Why do you suppose STEM is the one Career Cluster that matches exactly with one of PCHS's Academies?

Connections

As students finish research in their fifth career cluster, I wonder if they are beginning to make connections. I would like for them to explain a connection they have made between the cluster they researched this week and one they researched before now. Their repsonses should be interesting.

Welcome to Career Exploration

This will be a place to reflect on our new class at PCHS.  Career Exploration will no doubt be an asset for our students as they begin to plan their high school, training, college, and/or work experience.  My hope is to record my thoughts about students and their work and my dreams and hopes for the course.  And so it begins!
